One thing I didn’t anticipate about working from home after several years of going to an office every day is that I would become a target for the local missionaries. On one recent day I was visited by two separate SWAT teams of the nicest, politest, most pleasant people you can imagine–one from the Mormons and one from the Jehovah’s witnesses. The Mormons were three very young men (”elders!”) in white shirts and ties, and the Jehovah’s witnesses were three well-dressed ladies who looked as if they’d just left a church service. I should have asked them if I could take their pictures. Instead, I have the booklets they left behind to duke it out for my soul. It’s nice to be wanted, anyway.

I too have been visited by both groups. In fact, the Jehovah group of two women started visiting regularly. Both “religions” (or cults as some believe) have been mandated to do this work, in fact, the male 7th Day Adventists spend about 1 to 2 years doing this. That is what I call dedication and true belief in what you’re doing. In this day and age, I’m surprised anyone opens their doors to them. I suppose you could think of them as “salesmen” of sorts. What the groups are selling might not have monetary value (in essence it’s “free”), but does have everlasting value. Reminds me of Pascal and his wager, it’s better to “believe” since it won’t hurt, but if you don’t, you might live (or NOT) to regret it. Does this make sense? A paradox seemingly.
