What’s the difference between a birthday party given by Lego people and a real birthday party? The mess, of course. Lego people don’t have to race around the house trying to hide all the clutter before a party or pick up all the popsicle sticks, soda cans, and broken balloons afterwards. The Lego cake probably doesn’t taste all that good, either.
We are heading into birthday party season (three out of the four people in this household have birthdays in June.) When I was growing up, no birthday party was complete without my mother’s homemade six-layer chocolate cake, served with vanilla ice cream and homemade fruit punch. I’ve been dismayed to find that my family has no interest in carrying on this tradition. The cake of choice around here is angel food (a mix cake!) with whipped cream frosting and fruit. There’s something so… California about a birthday cake that’s almost healthy. Although I will admit that it’s a lot less work than my old favorite.

Christine,
I used to make a Snowball cake that is a variation on the angel food mix cake theme. It involved whipped cream, orange juice, some gelatin, ripped up pieces of cake, a bowl and coconut. Don’t know if that would appeal! The blouse is gorgeous. Thank yous so much. MARY
