1. Vanity license plates that demonstrate an insufficient level of irony. Example: a license plate on a black BMW that says BLKBMR. If you’re going to get a vanity plate, please do it with a little panache.
2. Waiting for a child at the bus stop who arrives late because the bus driver got a speeding ticket. It goes without saying that this only happens on a day when you are already late for your dentist appointment.

Exactly … please avoid any license plate using the word “MY” or “MINE” (because we already assume you own it), the color of the car (already apparent to those who are interested), the model of the car (you get the drift), or the fact that it is a truck, sedan, etc. A great vanity plate should be a window into something about the person who is driving the car, not just information about the car. A good example of an actual plate like this is: “WAS HIS”. A little mean, but also a window into the driver’s life.

My vanity plate used to be “Foetoes” (Hint: say it out loud.) For those of you in the know, it’ll make more sense. At a rest stop on I-90 one day, a woman approached me and asked if I were a photographer. She loved my license plate, she said, and was glad she had a chance to ask me about it. She neglected to mention what a clever way I have with words. With verbiage.

The best license plate I ever saw was years ago. Here it is FSBWFU. Mine is MAYHAY which is a nickname. Where does that fall on the register of cleverness?
